Having a college diploma is a magical passport to success.
Wrong!
Did you know that I went to the University of New Mexico and received a BA in Fine Art? After graduating, I had no idea what I wanted to pursue as a career and my degree had no value on the open market…
When I decided to get a certificate in Graphic Design (which only took 3 months), I knew that I didn’t need my degree and I had just wasted 5 years and over $100K. That was a hard pill to swallow.
What I needed was a place to learn the fundamentals before I went out to practice in a work environment. That nontraditional educational setting equipped me with many of the basic skills I still use in my coaching work today. Every job requires skills and knowledge, but not every job requires a degree or certification.

Way too often people get stuck doing a job they hate. Many times it’s because they think they don’t have any connections in the industry they want to work in. Friends, that’s not a good reason to stay miserable!
Even if you don’t know a lot of people right now, you can make powerful connections by simply getting around the right people and in the right places.
Here are 3 steps you can take to get started today:
1. Ask your close friends and family if they have any connections in the industry you want to get into.
2. Reach out to your new connections over coffee or lunch.
3. Come to the meeting with something to offer them as well.
